Safety first

Steps

  1. Weigh everything from the calculator.
  2. Stir the fragrance and polysorbate 20 together in the beaker until fully blended.
  3. Stir in the alcohol, then slowly add the distilled water while stirring.
  4. If it's cloudy, add a little more polysorbate 20, up to 3:1.
  5. Funnel it into the bottle, label it, and let it rest for 24 hours.
  6. Spot-test on a hidden seam and let it dry to check for marks.
  7. Mist lightly from about 12 in (30 cm) away and let it dry for a few minutes before making the bed.

Mix the fragrance into the solubilizer first, then add the alcohol, then the water. Shake before each use.

Water-based sprays can grow mold within a few weeks. Make small batches, use distilled water, or add a cosmetic preservative.

If something goes wrong

Water spots or rings on fabric
You sprayed too close or too much. Hold the bottle 12 in (30 cm) away and mist lightly. More alcohol dries faster.
Cloudy spray
Raise the solubilizer toward 3:1, and always blend fragrance and polysorbate 20 before adding water.
Scent too strong at bedtime
Lower the fragrance to 1% and spray 30 minutes before bed so it softens.
