Scent Almanac
Grapefruit
Citrus paradisi
Tangy, bittersweet and juicy, with a faintly sulfurous, pithy edge that makes it smell like real fruit. Pink grapefruit is a little sweeter than white.

Cautions
- Phototoxic in leave-on products (fine in rinse-off soap and home fragrance)
- Oxidizes with age — old oil is more likely to sensitize; store cool and dark
- Caution around pets (especially cats and birds) — don't diffuse in their space
- Fades quickly — weak in cold-process soap or at hot throw
Expressed grapefruit is considered mildly phototoxic in leave-on skin products; not an issue in rinse-off soap or home fragrance. It oxidizes readily, and citrus oils are commonly listed as a cat hazard.
How it behaves
CandlesWorkable
Citrus essential oils flash off in hot wax and give a faint hot throw on their own; anchor with litsea cubeba, lemongrass or a base note, or use a folded oil. Grapefruit fragrance oil is often used instead because the EO is so faint in wax.

A little lore
The grapefruit first appeared in Barbados in the 1700s as a chance cross between the sweet orange and the pomelo.
