Sweet Orange

Sweet Orange

Citrus sinensis

Top note Citrus Essential oil

Bright, juicy and sweet, exactly like peeling a ripe orange. Cheerful but short-lived — it's gone within an hour on a blotter.

Made from
Cold-pressed from the peel of sweet oranges, mostly as a by-product of the juice industry.

Cautions
Cold-pressed sweet orange isn't considered phototoxic, but oxidized old oil can irritate skin, so store it cool and dark and use it within a year or so. Citrus oils are commonly listed as a hazard for cats — don't diffuse in their space.

How it behaves

CandlesWorkable

Citrus essential oils flash off in hot wax and give a faint hot throw on their own; anchor with litsea cubeba, lemongrass or a base note, or use a folded oil.

Wax meltsWorkable
Reed diffuserGood
Room & linen sprayGreat
Electric (water) diffuserGreat
Cold-process soapWorkable

The classic case of fading: plain orange is nearly gone after cure. Five-fold or ten-fold orange holds far better and is still inexpensive.

Melt-and-pour soapGreat
Laundry & cleaningGood

Pleasant in cleaning sprays and dryer balls, but too weak and fleeting to scent laundry through a wash.

A little lore

Because it's pressed from peels left over from juicing, sweet orange is one of the cheapest and most widely produced essential oils in the world.
