Vanilla
Warm, creamy and sweet, ranging from bakery-bright to dark and boozy depending on the blend. Cheaper versions can read flat, sugary or like cake frosting.
- Discolors soap or wax (usually tan to dark brown)
How it behaves
One of the best-selling candle scents. Vanillin tints white wax ivory to tan over weeks, so use it in naturally cream soy, in colored wax, or accept a warm tone.
Heavy vanillin blends are thick and wick slowly; they can clog reeds and throw weakly. Choose a lighter vanilla or blend it into a brighter scent.
Turns soap tan to dark chocolate brown over one to three weeks. Plan a brown design, or keep the fragrance out of a white swirl portion so the contrast is intentional.
Browns melt-and-pour too. A vanilla color stabilizer slows it; otherwise use a naturally brown or dark-colored design.
Can tint light-colored detergent or powder; keep it low and test on a hidden area of white fabric.

A little lore
Vanilla orchids grown outside Mexico rarely set pods until 1841, when Edmond Albius, a 12-year-old enslaved boy on Réunion, worked out a quick way to pollinate the flowers by hand.
